Devlog 6 - Environments are Complete!!!

Every environment, object, and interactable scenario in Divine Omen Chapter 2 is officially complete! That means the bulk of the artwork is complete but there’s still LOTS to do. With that said, I’m very impressed by the progress I’ve made and I wanna share some with you! I made a lot of decisions while making these environments that I hope will elevate this chapter to another level. If nothing else, it’s certainly an improvement over Chapter 1. With my yapping out of the way, let’s get into some of the work I’ve done:

Sometimes subtle framing makes a big difference. Not much changed about this piece overall, but I think the few changes I did make really helped to elevate this environment. I like everything except for that stupid blue-gray wall! As a green lover making art for a green fantasy world, it’s hard to keep myself away from adding more green, but…sometimes it’s just the right call.

Speaking of green… The changes here are far less subtle. Before, the room felt barren and unrealistic. revamping the scenery in the background made the place feel more lived in. It’s also suitable for Avan. He loves green! Maybe he painted that cabinet himself. It’s good to imbue a bit of your characters into their environments. It makes everything feel just a little more cohesive.

Oh boy…just by looking at this one, you’d probably think it was rough to make. If you look closer, you’ll find these skulls have just been reused. In school I was taught to reuse anything you can, and I took that to heart here. I’ve used a lot of my work on Chapter 2 as an opportunity to create assets to be reused later. These skulls are some of those assets! I basically just painted a ton of different skulls facing different directions. Some with jaws, others without. That way I can use them easily any time I need them! And trust me…I used them.

See? Here are those skulls again. Making reusable assets was a genius call that paid off a LOT in these cave environments. The stone wall? Reused. The fallen pillar? Reused. I still make changes to make them unique, of course, but reusing these bits saved me DAYS of time.

Here’s another good example of reusing assets. All of these books originated from a collection of books I painted to use as assets. Then, I aligned them into neat little rows to fit on the shelves. Honestly, the process was super satisfying…also tedious, but hey, it looks cool!

Here’s our last one! Very little changed here, just a bit of the lighting and a few minor things here and there. If it isn’t broken, don’t bother fixing it! I think the framing, colors, and overall mood of this one is great! It’s warm an inviting the way a hospital (it’s called an infirmary in-game but hey…) should - IDEALLY - be, yet it still holds that ominous feeling. The dried bloodstains on the floor that won’t come up…this place has seen things. Despite it all, they want it to be a nice place!

Trust me, there are plenty more environments than this, but some of them are big spoilers! Others you can find on my social media - specifically TikTok. If you like what I do here or just generally would like to support what I do, I’d also like to mention you could donate and/or leave a review of Divine Omen here on itch.io, wishlist the game on Steam(!!!), or donate on Kofi! I also do commissions on Kofi if you like my stuff! One cool thing about donating is that every little bit goes toward funding a new game, one that’s been highly requested despite Divine Omen’s limited online presence. Head over to Kofi, you’ll see what I mean!

Thanks for reading and I’ll be sure to update again soon!
